This CD was recorded in 1991 and originally released on cassette. Reverend Joseph Welcome is manager and lead singer, Brother Edward Gatson sings tenor and plays guitar, Brother Paul Gatson is first tenor and bass guitarist, Brother Michael Richardson is another lead singer, Brother Daryl Sykes is on drums and I did like the credit for Reverend McKinley Lewis as ‘baritone and secretary’. Yes this is music from the old (Sunday) school, frequently featuring straining, impassioned lead vocals over relentlessly chanting backing vocalists, busy, bluesy guitar, and a functionally supportive rhythm section. The ballads are similarly stylistically old-fashioned (they could be from any time within the last 55 years or so), and the lyrics draw on familiar texts – there’s a “Two Wings” reference for those who may get excited about such things – alongside such commentaries as being in the recording studio, plus the odd bit of preaching.
This is the kind of music that most readers have in mind when we talk or think about gospel music, I guess. For that reason alone, The Mighty Sensational of Lake Charles, LA. deserve support – but even more so because their music is so vibrant and vital. Well worth checking out.”
